ABERDARE SHOTOKAN KARATE CLUB

About the Club

The Aberdare Shotokan Karate Club has been in existence since the Michael Sobell Sports Centre opened, having had a number of instructors in its long history. It is one of the oldest Shotokan Karate Clubs in South Wales and the second 'valleys' club to be established (the first being the Merthyr Club). The current chief instructor is Sensei Lyndon Davies (6th Dan) who has been teaching here since 1978. There are a number of other instructors at the club ranging from 1st Dan to 4th Dan grades, some of whom are members of the current Welsh Squad.

The club is a member of the Karate Union of Great Britain (KUGB) which is the largest single-style karate organisation in Britain, with around 10,000 members.

The club has always believed that each of its members should be of a good standard in both Kata and Kumite and although competition karate is not emphasised, we have enjoyed a great deal of success in it. Click here to find out when we train....

As part of the Welsh Team the club has produced:

European Kumite Silver Medallists: - Alex Labanciw, Michael Caviell (2007)

European Kumite Bronze Medallists: - Lyndon Davies (1986) Christian Whale and Lee Butler (1999), Matthew Labanciw (2005)

European Bronze Medallists Team Kata: - Lyndon Davies, Christian Whale and Lee Butler (1995)

European Individual Kata Bronze Medallist - Lyndon Davies (Nakayama Cup 1993)

The Club has produced four British Champions: - Lee Butler (1991), Lyndon Davies (1993), Marc Cavell (2000), Michael Caviell (2007)

and at the KUGB Welsh Championships the Club has had competitors in the finals since 1978: - see Competition Results

Grading examinations are held at three monthly intervals for the lower belt grades under Sensei Andy Sherry (8th Dan). To be eligible to take a grading you must have trained twice a week for a three month period and possess a KUGB licence.
